On January 7th, we customary eat nanakusa-gayu (seven herb rice porridge)
cooked with the seven herbs of spring. It is thought that
eating nanakusa-gayu will prevent illness in the coming year.

The nanakusa are traditionally water dropwort (seri), shepherd's purse (nazuna),
cudweed (gogyo), chickweed (hakobera), nipplewort (hotokenoza),
